It's Not Just A Cup!

According to ceramicist Michael Simon: "The cup is the most intimate of pottery forms.  Whether in the palm of the hand or the fingertips, we experience the weight and texture as we drink.  We pick it up without looking, kiss it with our lips and drink from it.  A good cup seems to hold the truth.  Every human culture has  developed cups..."

And for the first day of spring!!

Because my mood and spirits have been adversely affected by the mounds of snow and loooong winter here in Minnesota, I bought several bulbs to watch bloom.  It helped!

  2. Thanks for your kind words about supermoon!

Is it still winter there? Snow?

I'm a cup person...love cups. But for drinking coffee, they have to be a certain size and have a certain feel. Some don't work at all. I don't like big cups.

    I know, I'm a little strange!

  3. Cups do have a very sensual feel to them. I have certain cups that make me happy just to hold them. Happy spring, Kate!

  4. Love the ceramics. We have a good friend who is an art professor specializing in ceramics and we have his creations in many places in our house.

julie and i just returned from two weeks in Spain, so I am catching up with your blog. When I called my brother yesterday to catch up he was stuck in traffic in St. Paul due to an anti-war demonstration, on his way to a King Tut exhibition.

  7. I agree completely with his sentiment, but I'm not sure I agree with his execution. A cup has to have a handle big enough to fit a man's hand, it needs to hold the right amount of coffee (or tea), the walls must be a good shape to drink out of, the walls need to be thick enough to be durable and thin enough to feel the heat, it has to feel good on the lip, and it can't dribble.

We have about four thousand coffee cups, but the ones I love the best are the ones that my old company gave out as free hand-outs.

  8. Very smart of you to bring the springtime in doors. I love these cups. After staring at them for along time, I think I like the one in the top row all the way to the right the best. But, it was a hard choice.

  9. The one with the horse would have been coming home with me! Sorry the snow is still around. At least you won't be hurting for water like we will this year.

  11. I like your thoughts and the nice collection. Sadly cups and mugs are quite anonymous around here.

  12. These ceramics are beautiful but I have to say I don't like drinking out of them. Nice to look at tho or put flowers in and I love your spring flowers. Not long now and Spring will be here. I do hope Jim is a little better. I'll look back and see if you've left notes on that. So sorry you didn't make Mexico this last last.

  15. Ah, this is the pic that you sent in an email. i love these cups! It was fun reading the comments on these cups, too. Everyone seems to have certain cups they like drinking from, whether they're handmade ceramics, handled or handleless, cheap giveaways, etc.
I have about 4 cups I regularly drink from, but one is my favorite... and it is the way it fits my hand perfectly!
