This is the underside of the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN.  To get the best view of the ships as they enter the canal going to or from Lake Superior I suggest you stay at the South Pier Inn which you can see in the background.  Lovely rooms and suites.

The Aerial Lift Bridge is a major landmark in the port city of Duluth, Minnesota. The span is a vertical lift bridge, which is rather uncommon, but it began life as an extremely rare transporter bridge—the first of just two such bridges ever constructed in the United States.[2] Originally built in 1905, the bridge was upgraded in 1929–30 to the current lifting design and continues to operate today. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1973. A maritime museum maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers exists near the site of the bridge. Irresistible

Since I cannot resist a man carrying flowers I chatted with Mike who was very easy to approach. A recent transplant from San Francisco, Mike bought this bouquet at a small satellite Farmers Market behind the Starbucks and Barnes & Noble store in my Highland Park neighborhood.  Despite the cruel, cold winter of 2010-11, Mike claims that he likes it here. Seems an unlikely environment after the City by the Bay. He chose a good neighborhood in which to live and resides within walking distance of all the stores and shops. Bet I'll see him again.

Three sisters

On a short day trip from St. Paul to Duluth to see the Three Tall Ships, I ran into these three sisters.  When we met on a path that skirts the harbor, I asked if their bright pink shirts were the traditional breast cancer shirts.  Nope, the three of them were celebrating Maggie, the youngest sister's  60th birthday.  They turned around so that I could see and photograph their birth ranks.  Top Photo: Penny on the far left is from the Twin Cities, Sue hails from the Chicago area,  and Maggie is from Colorado but works in Singapore.  The sisters get together several times a year, and from what I could observe, they have a grand time together.

ABC WEDNESDAY-"A"-ART AND MORE ART

Yesterday  I showed you art of an entirely different genre.  This piece demonstrates that the exhibit in Freedom Park is very eclectic.

ABC WEDNESDAY-"A"-ART

These two pieces were in the art gallery in July at Freedom Park,  a small oasis along the banks of the Mississippi in Prescott, Wisconsin, which is a regular stop on our frequent road trips alongside my favorite river.

2023 Women's World Cup-USA Midfielder

Getting ready for the 2023 FIFAWomen's World Cup

TEAM USA-MIDFIELDER

It's our great wish that Team USA wins today! If not, we can still say it's been a great ride this year.  Here's hoping!

Added later:  Congratulations to Japan for winning the Women's World Cup final, defeating the USA team with penalty kicks.  My heart is broken!!

CAMERA CRITTERS-Fenced Canines

I'd howl too if someone had tethered me that close to a fence! When the owner saw me taking photos, he crossed the parking lot, untied the dogs and brought them to the table where he and his noisy family were enjoying coffee and considerably more leg room than these animals.  Now, at least, the dogs themselves got more comfortable .  Bloggers strike again!

Self Portrait

A friend suggested that I join Flickr's 365 Days  group which mandates that one posts a different self-portrait each day for one whole year.  I thought about it, checked into it, and thought momentarily that I'd give it a whirl.  Jim came into the room as I was photographing my feet, ankles, shoes, and hands so Jim asked what was possessing me.  I showed him the site, with many hilarious as well as quite professional photos, but he just stared at me and left the room shaking his head.  I think I lost his support. After more careful consideration, I think I'll delay my decision until clearer heads prevail. CDP keeps me busy enough!

FIFA-WOMEN'S WORLD CUP SOCCER

Added Later:  Whoopee!!

Referee Jacqui Melksham gave Erika (Brazil vs US game) a yellow card warning for time-wasting.

Let's hope that neither team during the game today, France vs USA, uses these ridiculous tactics and fake injuries.  I've got my fingers crossed for a US win.

ABC WEDNESDAY-"Z"-ZEN STONES

These are platters of Zen stones made by Peter, a former middle school student of mine who is now a very creative and successful glass blower.  If you go HERE, you will see a copy of a wall hanging that Peter made for me.  Because it is in my front entryway, I touch the stones when I leave my home and when I return.  Reminds me of Zen principles and what is important in life.

The Swing

How do you like to go up in a swing,

Up in the air so blue?

Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing

Ever a child can do!

Early in the morning is the best time to see my neighborhood at peace with itself with nary a soul around.  If the swing were not so low, I'd try it out.

A View from the Bridge

Last Sunday I posted several views of the Ford Parkway Bridge.  After walking halfway across it, I can show you the upstream view taken from that bridge, looking north.  In the distance you can see the Lake Street bridge and behind it, barely a glimpse of one of the buildings on the University of Minnesota campus.  How I miss my alma mater...so much energy there!

Looking south there is a glimpse of what you will see if you decide to brave the dams and canoe down the Mississippi to the Gulf.  Quite a lovely and challenging sight, isn't it?

Bleu Cheese, perhaps?-Camera Critters

Displays in grocery stores are getting more and more creative.  It seems that blue cows such as this one helps Beemster develop some wonderful cheese.

Beemster cheeses come from the quiet canal lined pastures of North Holland where cows have grazed freely since 1612.

Stealth Photographs

I love our frequent road trips because we meet the most interesting people.  Sometimes it's more fun not to introduce ourselves and just enjoy the scenery. Sometimes Jim enjoys the scenery more than I!

Jazz With a Brazilian Beat

The musician on the drums played with Jimi Hendrix and was at Woodstock in 1969.  To make him feel welcome we all chanted, "No more rain!  No more rain!"

Born on the Fourth of July! Maggi's Birthday!

On July 4, 2007 I first posted Maggi's photo to celebrate this day. Since four years have passed and some of you may not have been part of CDP then, I am reposting it...Maggi our nine-year-old "mongrel" dog was born on the Fourth of July and is of mixed breed.  This mixed ancestry is similar to many Americans  and certainly is parallel to the members in our own family. We can lay claim to African Americans, Belgian, Dutch, French, German, Irish, Italian, Native American, and West Indies ancestors.  Now that's truly USA!!

Sunday Bridge-Different View Points

O

The 740 River Drive Apartment and Condo building looks like it's sitting on  the Ford Parkway Bridge, which crosses the Mississippi river, connecting St. Paul and Minneapolis.  Of course, it isn't but it sits on the banks of the Mississippi and has a fantastic view of both the bridge and the river.

The bridge is designed with beautiful arches.

Before crossing the bridge on the west side, a road runs down to the locks and dams where there is a Visitor Center.

It's great fun either to walk or bike across the bridge when everything along the river is lush and green.
