R.I.P.   Neil Armstrong

Family statement regarding the death of Neil Armstrong:  For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.

"Young Girl Reading"

A Young Girl Reading
Using Imagination
A World of Her Own
Inspired by a post by another Minnesota blogger, Extended Library Jewel, who reviewed a book that included art involving women reading, I decided to try to use a version of that as a Monday theme for my own blog, but rather than confine it to females reading, I shall include men and boys, also.  The debut portrait is of my granddaughter, Olivia, paired with a portrait by Jean-Honoré Fragonard entitled "A Young Girl Reading"--neither of whom are yet women but reading sends them on the right path.

Olivia, holding Columbia, is reading The Music of Dolphins by Karen Hesse

Fitness for Life

Victim? Volunteer?
James hustles up Ramsey Hill
Staying fit for Life

Last Thursday (August 9) I introduced you to Van Evans who started a neighborhood fitness progam on the corner of Summit Avenue and the top of Ramsey Hill.  James posed for me so that I could show you some of the action that takes place there on most Saturday mornings from 8:30-10:30 am.  James is a native St. Paulite who graduated from  Highland Senior High and then attended the University of Minnesota.

Eternal Rest

Rest in Peace, Julie
A Life Snuffed Out Much Too Soon
Rest in Peace Lost Niece

April 30, 1970
July 29, 2012

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

A Passion for Fitness!

Staying Fit is Good!
Van offers Community
Fitness Program

Van Evans, a native St. Paulite, is interested in both fitness and community involvement.  As a result he has begun a community program that meets on the corner of Summit Avenue and the top of Ramsey Hill every Saturday from 8:30-10:30 am. A lawn sign indicates that he's available to work with passersby and neighborhood people on physical workouts.  A 1986 high school graduate of St. Paul Academy and the University of Minnesota, he is now employed in the field of sports medicine.  If you want to lift weights or run up the "killer" Ramsey Hill, come out to meet Van next Saturday!

Amber Ale

Restaurant and Bar
New to the Neighborhood
Should I Try the Ale?

We'll set the scene.

1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (Ok, make that a young man of 32).

As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with "fat tires" through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with a handful of ingredients and an imagination full of recipes.

And then there was beer.

Jeff's first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife's involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium's first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner.

And now, she's our CEO.

Electrical engineer meets social worker; ideals flourish

The other side of the New Belgium story isn't as romantic as bicycling through Europe, but it gives testament to our dedication and hard work.  And it goes like this: Jeff, an electrical engineer by day and tinkerer by nature, builds a homebrewing kit in his basement out of repurposed dairy equipment. His Belgian inspired brews garnered
enough praise from friends and neighbors that Jeff and Kim take their basement brewery commercial in 1991.

Clothes for Cuba-ABC WEDNESDAY Bonus Photo

"Cute" clothes for Cuba
 Practical   Easy to Pack
Ordered Black and White

Yes, I'm going to Cuba for Eight Days!
Leaving on October 13...Can't wait!!

Found these garments at the St. Paul Highland Art Fair, but they didn't have my size.  The artist is willing to make the skirt for me because it'll be easy to roll up in my suitcase and fun to wear.  I'll probably give it away when I leave.  We're bringing all kinds of humanitarian items (over-the-counter medicines, aspirin, children's
vitamins, toothbrushes and toothpaste samples my dentist will provide, sample shampoo and conditioner, and best of supplies and books for children).  I am an expert at getting donations from commercial establishments!
