National Night Out, held on the 1st Tuesday of every August, is a nationwide event designed to build partnerships, strengthen relationships between neighbors and law enforcement, and raise crime prevention awareness across the nation.
For the past four or five years the Bayard Avenue Neighbors plus many who lived on the adjoining side streets have gathered together to enjoy one another on this evening. By prior arrangement to the delight of the children we were visited by the St Paul Police Swat Team, police officers, fireman and a police dog. The potluck food was plentiful and delicious and the conversation was terrific!
What a wonderful tradition! People can become so isolated nowadays even if they live in small suburban neighbourhoods.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to meet and interact with the neighbors. Looks like a good event.
ReplyDeleteIt is a great event and you took some nice shots of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm betting that the kids in the neighborhood loved having the firemen, swat team and the police dog to visit with.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this event, but I'm sure the kiddo had a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteit's national yet i've never heard of it! what a great idea! love the photos especially the pup at the end! my ozzy has that same muzzle for vet visits...his vet calls it his "party hat" lol
ReplyDeleteTanya, Google it on the internet, get the information, and then plan one next year. Our neighbours love it; it is widely publicised throughout the Twin Cities and the police and firemen spend the evening going from one neighbourhood to another. Lots of good will built up which is so important esp now since our police are so maligned in some quarters. According to the papers today, even neighbourhoods with higher crime were welcoming. Some neighbourhoods had choirs and dances---all in the street. So much fun!!
DeletePotlucks are a great way to get people together. In Alaska they are very popular especially in winter when you don't go out often.
ReplyDeleteThe dog's a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe not for suspects.
Such a good idea Kate. Such a fun way for neighbourhood communities to keep in touch, extra special with the appearance of the 'official' visitors, especially the gorgeous police dog 😃
ReplyDeleteI think it is so important to know your neighbor...looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like fun. My neighborhood for years has had a summer block party, not part of anything national, but these days I rarely seem to be there when the party is held.
