Monday Mural-Mazatlán, México

I started posting photos on CDP in 2007, and until the last month or two never seemed to have a problem finding images/subjects to photograph.  Something is amiss. The gray, gloomy winter weather has not inspired me, and I feel that I haven't really done much to improve my technical skills over these almost-eight years. Previously during the winter I posted from Mazatlán or Santa Fe blogs I created as we spent winter months in either of these two places.  There never seemed to be a dearth of things  to capture for the blog.  Lately I have had to search my archives to find something to post, such as this one taken on a tour of private homes in Maz in 2008.  I know I definitely need a vacation and a change of scenery.  Perhaps I'm just getting burned out?!

  1. That is a problem that more people have I think, you don't go out that much as in summertimes, but fortunately we have our archives. This is a very nice mural.

  2. Eight years is a long time to come up with a daily photo Kate. I haven't been at it that long and I have trouble too. proof would be my post today. It is so much easier in the summer in Colorado. I know back at home no one wants to see my pictures from the parking lot or the big box stores. Stay with us Kate!

  3. I've entered these lulls too. Times when the camera it not at my side for long times. A fellow artist, when we were discussing this dilemma, asked me "But do you still SEE the photos you want to take?" That was so helpful. Thanks Bonnie.

  4. Maybe when all this cold weather retreats your creative juices will thaw. We all have times where noting seems to capture our imagination. I love your photos so I want to encourage you to go with flow and bask in the glow!

  5. I know how you feel. I sometimes think I've exhausted the things to see in Phoenix but I always seem to rally with another go around. It's probably just the winter slumps. It will pass.

  6. Gosh imagine having this beauty hanging in your home ! I think what it is Kate is that you've been so unwell with the flu just a short while back, it really takes it out of you, I remember feeling completely 'washed out' for weeks, just take each day, you live in a beautiful part of the world.. as you feel better the inspiration will come back I'm sure.

  7. well, i commend you for 8 years of steadiness! and i've done nothing to improve my technical skills or learn my camera in 4 years.

    that's a neat mural - almost alienish.

  9. I am feeling the same way. From time to time, I need a break. Sharon has been at it longer than me and has never taken a break. I don't know how she does it.

  10. Finding inspiration can be hard, but don't force it. The creative juices will flow again soon.

  12. I've been struggling this winter to get out for pics - it has been so grey and uninspiring - so understand your problem. Plus as Grace says the flu can really exhaust you for a long time. I love this mural!

  13. It's quite a formidable mural!

Perhaps taking in a couple of local museums might give you plenty of material to get you through the winter.

  15. I hear you on the "burn out." The grief doesn't help either. Nice shot though.

  16. I'm going through that rut too. Everything looks the same outside. I do like this mural though. Was it part of a patio?

  17. Gorgeous mural!
As the comments above show, you're not alone, Kate! I find winter a hard time for blogging. The weather discourages me, the light can be flat, and the short days leave me uninspired. Vacations can pump life into the dullest of days. And I echo comments that the flu can take a big whack out of creative juices. I had back-to-back ailments at the end of last year. Today was the first day I've felt really good in ages.
(Finally: I have had a DVD set on Fundamentals of Photography from Great Courses for nearly a year and have yet to start watching. In the meantime, the camera remains set on "Auto." I'm annoyed with myself.)

  18. I like the light fragility of this mural. The setting looks almost like a church with those two candles on an altar!

  19. I like this mural. The images are both delicate and elvish and project tranquility. As to your doldrums, I get that too. Personally, I'm driven by the availability of sunshine. Treat yourself to a trip south and soak in all that vitamin D. Thanks, Kate, for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
