Home Ownership
Remember the sweet photo of a painting my Florida friend sent me that I posted last Sunday? Well, the homestead looks a little different now. Fireplace repair, both inside and out, is an expensive item. If you are in the market to buy a house with one or two of them, be sure to check it out. Our two looked in good shape, but it was deceptive. They should be repaired soon (nay, rebuilt!) for a good old-fashioned fire to warm the cockles of our hearts while our pocketbook has taken a substantial hit. How I love owning a home!!

Well, here you sum up the reason I rent. Being single, it's just almost impossible to keep up with home repairs. My new apartment has a fireplace but since almost every day in the winter is a "no burn" day here because of pollution, it's of little use. I actually have a fireplace candle holder in it. That way I can see flickering fire light with no smoke going up the chimney.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a fireplace but there is always something that needs to be done around our place. We have always been DIY people but as we get older, that gets harder to do.
ReplyDeleteYup I hear you Kate, there is always something.. We're working our way around repainting (it has been 10 years since we last painted) then there's the garden oh la! The thought of an apartment is incredibly appealing at times :)
ReplyDeletecan get quite costly for sure!
ReplyDeleteI remember when we bought our first house here in Ocala - the fireplace needed some work. Fortunately, it had been converted to gas, but the damage was due to years of use previously. It's always something!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, you were not kidding when you said fireplace repair. I bet you could get some great pictures from way up there. :-)
ReplyDeleteNothing like a crackling fire to make you feel warm! I guess that ambience is rather expensive though.
ReplyDeleteMy dad loves a cozy fireplace. We have one in our house as well, but we don't use it that much.

There would always be something or another to be repaired anyway in a house. My parents had a fireplace in their house in cottage country.
ReplyDeleteMakes renting not seem so bad.
ReplyDeleteA house needs some repair but the older it becomes the more repair has to be done unfortunately. Ours is now 36 years old....!
ReplyDeletei do hope they can get them done!
ReplyDeleteWe had fireplaces in three homes in California and never used any of them. The buyer of one of our homes talked to a chatty neighbor who told him that the previous owner (nearly 20 years before) had said the fireplace needed work. An inspection proved him right and cost us thousands off the selling price, and unhappy blow at the end of the transaction. Better you do it now and breathe easy than get blind-sided.
ReplyDeleteKate, this is a task I will leave to the next owner of my house unless the house inspection and sale contract require it.
