While waiting for the ferry to take us to Fort Sumter, I noticed a woman weaving baskets. She declined my request to take her portrait but she said that I could photograph her while she was weaving, which I did, and my camera captured her hands at work. I don't know enough about sweetgrass baskets so I don't know if this one is or isn't one. After seeing some sweetgrass images on the internet and checking out a
photograph of Suzi's from her blog, I don't think it is...but, what do I know?!
When I was a Boy Scout we wove a basket. It was difficult, and it was a lot easier than she she is doing.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate! So you are in beautiful Charleston. I visited Charleston last year. And some weeks ago, my friend André sent me this series of articles about portraits of american people. You'll see that the last one is dedicated to "Nancy : the sweetgrass basket weaver". Maybe the same woman that you recently met : http://www.usa-decouverte.com/culture/magazine/rencontres_insolites_4_portraits_americains.html
ReplyDeleteIf you smell the basket you'll know the fragrance of the sweetgrass.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what it is for but I love that curve and swirl.
ReplyDeleteHave to admire pics of working hands!
ReplyDeletewow, that is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful basket!
ReplyDeleteWhatever basket it is, my wife would have loved to have one :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it would be wonderful to be able to make something so lovely.
ReplyDeleteToo bad she didn't want her portrait taken. She should be proud of her talent. If she knew your blog, she would have been happy to join the other wonderful artists that are memorialized there.
Hi, Kate,
ReplyDeleteI just visited your blog for the first time. You have done a beautiful job!

Hi, Kate,

Whatever kind it is...it's beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know from what kind of basket but I know I like it...I think it's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly looks beautifully made and sturdy. The coiled handles are also a nice touch. Good shot, even if the weaver wanted to remain anonymous.
ReplyDeleteI love baskets! I don't know anything about sweetgrass either, but this one is pretty. That much I can tell you. :)
ReplyDeleteMy parents live in Charleston and we've bought many sweetgrass baskets in the market. It looks like a sweetgrass basket to me although the two-tone colors are a bit odd. But she's doing it in the same style. Congrats on getting a picture - those ladies are usually very firm about not wanting to be photographed.
ReplyDeleteI love what you captured with this image, Kate. I weave with reed, but I would love to try pine needles and grasses.
ReplyDeleteSuch talent.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of baskets and weavers in my previous work, but I don't know the material she is using. It looks like she used fresh and dried of whatever it is to get the lovely two tones. Wonderful shape for the handles too.
ReplyDeleteLovely shot of hands at work, Kate. This tells me more about her than her portrait.
ReplyDeleteWhat a talent!
ReplyDeleteSuch talent!
