9/11

9/11 used to be a wonderful day in my life because it is the anniversary of my birth. In our house we have birthday weeks to celebrate our special days. After the infamous 9/11 event, it was difficult to celebrate as we had previously because of the sorrow we carried around with us as we recalled the lives that were lost that day and also because of the violence affecting people throughout the world. Ultimately, however, we decided,to concentrate on the positive and celebrate my birthday as we normally had, but not forgetting all the innocent people world-wide who have suffered injustices. My birthday now has a special significance that encompasses the globe. Following are photos of our family celebration last Sunday.
Five-year-old Olivia's cake that she baked for me.

I guess I needed help to blow out candles on two cakes. If I had had all the candles marking my years, it would have looked like a blowtorch instead.

  1. Happy Birthday! Life is full of contradictions. We embrace them all as part of our journey. Have a great day; I know you will keep part of your heart warm for the survivors and bereaved families, but don't let it subtract from your joy.

  4. I gave up on all the candles a few (or more) years back when it set off all the smoke alarms.

I had to explain in my blog why my posts last week were curt and canned.

  5. Happy Birthday Kate. 9/11 is also the anniversary of my mother's death. From now on when that date comes around I will also remember it's your birthday and will have reason to smile :)

    You have beautiful grandchildren.

Congratulations Kate and many happy birthdays in the future!
Isn`t that a great happiness to celebrate the birthday with grandchildren and family. I think, we are so lucky in that way.

In that day 6 years ago, we were in the summer cottage,my daughter gave a call and ask me to put TV on. This horrible thing was happening then.
But I had, just before that, made one different call - I decided to get Kiki, she was then one month.
I will always remember that day and now I will remember your birthday too!
    Have a nice day!

  11. Yes, Happy Birthday!

Your birthday date may now be easy to remember, unfortunatley not only for a good reason!

Yes, I of course counted the candles on the square good looking cake and found 21! ... but you fairly admitted that some candles may have been missing. Of course it makes blowing easier, but you seem to have had some nice assistance for the procedure!

This date is the day our Autumn Eve was put to sleep. I still miss that dog a lot.

    Have a nice, rest-of-the-week.

  20. I think it's very important to remember the good things, and not to let the bad ones destroy them.

  21. Sorry I missed it, but happy birthday anyway.

Two cakes! Wow, that's awesome, and it looks like you had plenty of help there to eat them.

Your grandkids are great looking. Do you live up to your responsibilites as a grandparent by spoiling them rotten and sending them home to their parents?

  30. Kate,
I'm so glad that you are back to celebrating your birthday. I love what you said about how it now has special significance. There is so much tragedy around the globe, and a birthday is a perfect time to be thankful for the blessings we have in our lives and to consider what we will do to bring peace to others (whether through volunteering or just taking a little extra time to be nice to other people).

I hope this new birth year will be a wonderful one for you!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY. -- Cate
