Eight Engines!

On the way to the Taste of Minnesota festival on Independence Day, DH and I walked along the Mississippi to watch the river traffic. We noticed 4 train engines pulling some loaded cars of coal. Because there were 4 engines, we knew that the train had to be long, and long it was. We counted 150 cars loaded with coal, with 4 more engines pushing in the rear, for a total of 8 mighty engines. To see two more photos of this train go to ExtraExtra.

  1. un train impressionnant, 150 voitures de charbon...... Quand il passe au passage à niveau, cela ne doit pas faire plaisir aux voitures ;o) je te souhaite un bon weekend

an impressive train, 150 coal cars ...... When it passes to the level crossing, that should not give pleasure with the cars ;O) I wish you a good weekend

  2. Wow that really is a long train. We have a train that runs through town here too. If you get stopped by one of those long ones it seems like forever before it passes by and you can move again.

Can you imagine how many trucks that would take? No wonder they use trains. Amazing photo and interesting story, Kate.

  7. I love locomotives for some reason! I had forgotten about the mighty long trains -- saw a lot of them in the mid-west, and as Olivier says, it wasn't fun sitting at the crossing late at night. Here in Switzerland, the cargo trains aren't *that* long, but I've seen cars, ship containers, gas/petrol tanks, recyclables rolling along on the tracks. The passenger trains sometimes *seem* rather long, but they're probably no more than 15 compartments long.

  8. This photo reminded me of a toy train. It's the perspective, I think. You had to stand and count for a long time, Kate.

My little sunflower has indeed lifted it's head today. The sun is trying to come out too.

  12. Ooooh, my almost 4 year old would have been beside himself to see so many trains. He is totally obsessed and now his baby brother is beginning to show similar symptoms. Boys...

  14. When I was a kid, my siblings and I would try to count the number of cars on trains. I haven't done that in years.

I see lots of train cars heaped with sand here in Florida and I wonder how that much sand can possibly be worth the price of shipping it. There are always a lot of engines pulling too, you can imagine the weight of dozens and dozens of cars of sand. It would blow the tires out on a truck to try to do that over roads.
