Shadow and sunshine

Wherever I go on vacation, I always am able to find a good cafe.  For years I have been going to the Red Cup when we are on Washington Island and have found their expansion in the back of the cafe a true delight. . . a new deck with morning sunshine. I particularly liked the shadow of the leaves on the corrugated steel wall.

Perhaps the sunsets will become commonplace by the time we leave, but I loved this one on our first night back in Door County!

My personal heaven

Here's where DH, WW, and I  will be hanging out for the next week or so-- our favorite spot on Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin. We will be on the west, sunset-side along Green Bay waters rather than the east, sunrise-side on Lake Michigan. Our cottage has a clear view of the water at the edge of the green lawn with a small sandy area and boat launch.  The Island is about 6 miles long and 5 miles across with approximately 660 year-round residents, but lots more in the summer. Many, but not all, of the permanent residents are Icelandic and Scandinavian descendants. The peninsula has become so popular that we prefer the Island.  Although there are lots of tourists there, too, during the summer months, it resembles what the Peninsula used to be like when I was a kid. Anywhere on Door County, fondly known as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest," is a wonderful place to vacation.  I'll add more photos as soon as I can establish an internet connection.

Young Protestor

Last Friday I posted photos of the protestors in front of the Governor's Mansion on Summit Avenue in  St. Paul and noted that people representative of the community were there: blacks, whites, Asians, Hispanics and any number of ethnic groups.  I am not sure what group this young man represented but his traditional dress was colourful!

Two Beautiful Dogs

Abbey, an 11-year-old former show dog

I have a friend who does not own a dog; he doesn't need to do that because he has neighbours who gratefully surrender their dogs to him whenever he decides to walk either of them to Turtle Restaurant and Bakery on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. Abby, on the left is younger and far more active than Abbey above.

Both dogs (whichever one is there at the time) wait patiently for treats provided by the staff while Glenn reads the New York Times.  Smart dogs!!

Justice for Philando Castille

People protesting the death of Philando Castille in Falcon Heights, a St. Paul, Mn. suburb, by a Saint Anthony police officer began Wednesday night.  I drove to the gathering on Summit Avenue in front of the Governor's Manson about 4 pm Thursday afternoon and observed an orderly, large crowd of people, representative of our community:  blacks, whites, Hispanics, Africans, and Asians. In the words of our President, "too many shootings, too many times!"

WWWW+Walking With Wild Wendy

While walking with Wild Wendy this summer when the tulips, peonies, and lilies were in bloom we had lots of beautiful flowers to photograph.  This morning we discovered something a bit more novel.  At the front entrance of one home, we discovered this sweet little house. I'll have to go back and snoop around the back alley to see if there are signs of any children living there.  Or perhaps it's an adult-child just having fun!

Image of Calmness

Despite being damaged by the elements, this small lawn ornament is the image of calmness. It reminds me that I need to return to meditation, which is a healthy practice endorsed by the medical profession.  Do any of you meditate?

Utility Box Mural

Found this striking mural painted on a utility box located on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, along the American Indian Cultural Corridor. It sits at the curb across from a library and the mural I posted earlier here.

Urban Fence

While walking Wild Wendy I saw this picturesque white fence with part of the shrub peeking through the slats. I like the tenacity of the greenery and the way it looks as it tries to escape its confinement.

Corporate Prostitution: How lucky can we get??!!

Within a one mile radius we have the good fortune of a Target Express store that replaced a BOOK STORE  (Ford Parkway and Cleveland), two Walgreens (Ford Parkway & Snelling and Randolph) plus this new arrival, CVS on Fairview and Grand) on the former Whole Foods neighbourhood store location, which is sorely missed. We obviously won the lottery for corporate interest!  Bah! Humbug

Native American Mural

I found several murals on a wall next to a Minneapolis Library on Franklin Avenue.  There are a few blocks in that neighbourhood that could be classifieds as the Native American corridor, and I will post more in the future. I have NO idea what this one represents.

VIP Area

I believe that this is the first year that a special area has been cordoned off to the right of the main stage in Mears Park for VIP's! I noticed that a catered meal was offered, obviously a private party.  I'm not complaining since the three-day outdoor Jazz concert is free but I have one question.  How can I become a VIP??
