Last Thursday night DH and I attended an event sponsored by Animal Folks, a national group that has programs that oppose animal cruelty and use the justice system to work to protect animals. We viewed a documentary, Dog By Dog, exposing the states with the most puppy mills. After the film several people from Minnesota, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, who are actively engaged in animal law reform on many different levels, spoke about their roles (legislators, lawyers, volunteers and the film producer) and answered questions. Not confined to dogs and cats, the group is involved in protecting agricultural and farm animals, too. The statistics are astounding and animals need our protection. To learn more, go to this MN Animal Folks site.
This sweet service animal quietly joined the group with her owner, sitting and then lying across the auditorium steps.
I've known this to be an ongoing problem for some time, but I'm guessing it's a lot bigger problem than I thought originally. Glad to hear there are so many folks working to deal with it. I wonder how many puppy mills Florida has. I know our local paper advertises a lot of animals for sale in its Want Ads section.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, J. So glad you read this because it is important to raise everyone's awareness of this terribly cruel but very lucrative business for the unscrupulous so-called breeders. You can bet that most animals advertised on the internet, many sold in pet stores found their way there from unbelievable cruel conditions. DH has in the past worked on helping MN legislators formulate and pass some animal cruelly laws, but much more has to be done to protect animals in every state in the union. I am not a crusader but would like to make our society a just world for all animals.
DeleteA very important message! Animals need all the help they can get to make sure they have a good life.
ReplyDeleteI second Jacob's comments. I'm so glad people are starting to do something about this problem.
ReplyDeleteA worthy cause. All animals should be loved and cared for or people shouldn't have them.
ReplyDeleteThought provoking, Kate. Sad to know there are people out there who think nothing of doing this.
ReplyDeleteAnimal cruelty laws have been around since 1925, but this has not stopped these terrible actions. In fact, animal cruelty laws were used as a model for laws against cruelty to children. In the late 19th Century in New York state a young abused girl was brought to court. The attorney argued that she had the same rights to protection that the law afforded to horses, dogs, and cats. This was one of the beginnings of juvenile court law in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteIt breaks my heart to learn of the sort of animal abuse that goes on.
