  1. Forest fires are necessary for maintaining a healthy forest balance but knowing that doesn't keep it from being devastating.

  2. It does make for a strong photo though. Love the vertical lines.
Perhaps this was a planned fire?

  3. No, this was not. It raged over thousands of acres, and created quite a controversy since there was a difference of opinion initially on how it should be handled. We feared for the Boundary Waters at the time, but it survived!

  4. This sad sight is so familiar Kate, every summer we have devastating fires like this..so horrific for the wildlife and homes, and the worst thing is that in a lot of cases the fires are deliberately lit.

  6. Unfortunately I've seen this way too often. We have way too many forest fires in the southwest.

  7. Sad to see so much destruction. One thing though, in the spring the wild flowers are spectacular in some of these burn areas. We have many areas like this one here.

  8. I am glad the Boundary Waters survived. Julie and I did a canoe trip with my brother's family there about 15 years ago. I still wear the Gunflint Trail t shirt. Julie is not a camper. There are still lots of stories from that trip being shared.

  11. Sad, indeed, but the phoenix rises from the ashes! Having lived in Arizona for 40 years I've seen many devastating forest fires and you quickly learn that Mother Nature is a great force in our lives.

  12. Fortunately, we don't have many of these around here. We get plenty of rain, which probably keeps things from getting so dry that trees are vulnerable.

  13. I hope you revisit next year and notice regrowth.
