Craft Fair

A local middle school has an annual craft fair which I always attend. This year was no exception and despite the falling snow on Saturday I trudged over to see the wares. These doll figures always appeal to me altho I've never purchaed one. Attendance in the morning was sparse because of the snowfall, and my favorite vendor of spectacular birds was not there this year because of a family illness. I had hoped to photograph one of them to show you. Perhaps next year!

  1. You were after a photo of a bird, and you got one. A yellow bird on the shoulder of this tree woman.

  2. Kate, the students make those dolls? I'm thinking of that vendor who wasn't there. Poor person, a family illness is such a bad thing and not being able to make money selling their craft makes things even worse. I hope they are back next year and you can show us those beautiful birds.

I am so glad you and your family are all OK. On the portal I thought this was perhaps you or a family member laid out owing to illness. I enjoyed your post and narrative after reading it and seeing the larger picture.

  6. Love the photo. My friend in Ohio always sends me wonderful pressies from the Craft Fairs and they are always so original and beautifully made. It's a great tradition you have in America.

  9. Hi Kate

Don't you just hate it when you type out a lengthy comment, and the computer eats it!

Yes, I do know about men's Sheds, and did a blog about them (and broader community sheds) from Tasmania:

    Community Shed, Deloraine

They were mainly an nitiative from Departments of Health to fill the need in men's lives to have places of connection (which women seem to have been socialised to formulate far better)...and a by-product is that more chat and discuss the niggling worries they may have and be more likely to see medical attention (far fewer men than women will take concerns to the doctor), as well as being good for mental health.

Brian, who featurd on my blog was such a wonderful example - a retired dairy farmer and new "sheddie" (as denizens of the shed are somewhat inevitably called!)

  12. When I owned my store, I sponsored a "paper doll" traveling exhibit. My customers made the 3-D dolls (over 35), and stores around the country put them on display for 30 days before sending them on to the next. What is interesting is how popular doll-making is. I love this one and the Hello, Dolly! one!
