Greek or Italian?



Greek or Italian?
I've always used Italian
Hard to know what's best.

Before I saw these tins at Turtle Bakery on Chicago Avenue, I had always used olive oil imported and bottled by our favorite restaurant and deli,  Broders, in Minneapolis. Perhaps I should branch out a bit more? The articles I've read about the kind and quality of olive oil are not always helpful.

  1. I think this is a very slippery slope, especially if olive oil is spilled on it. It's all Greek to me.

    Yes, Blogger is screwed up. To what would you switch?

  2. i always go for cheap. i'm sure i'm missing a lot of quality and flavor, but since i don't use it often...

  3. I've been buying local olive oil. We have a huge producer here and they make really great oil and lots of flavored oils too. If I don't get it, I usually get one from Italy. I think I have had some from Greece that I've gotten at Trader Joe's. They have all been good.

  5. No idea, but good olive oil is always welcome in a dish. I like the design on the container.

  7. Both are excellent as are Spanish and Portuguese and... French (especially from Les Baux de Provence)...

  8. Italian is often not Italian-I mean that it's business to buy cheaper olive oil by producers and sell it as Italian. It's not enough of Italian olive oil for the whole World

  9. For the past decade or so, I have learned that there is OK olive oil and there is great olive oil. Great olive oil can come from many places and might command a price premium, but usually is worth it.

  10. I always buy Spanish but I sometimes have trouble finding it here in rural Texas. If you have a Trader Joe's, they have a Spanish oil bottled under the Trader Joe's name which is very economical and as far as I'm concerned one of the best. A well-known cooking TV star and culinary instructor recommended it. I tried it and liked it. Alas, we don't have Trader Joe's in Texas!

  11. Hmmm. I can't say I'd recognize the difference, though I've done tastings of California olive oil and also had some with Arizona origins. We've just switched to Costco's organic extra virgin. I should take a look at where it's from.
    Problems with Blogger? I use WordPress. Especially since I've switched providers it seems to be working pretty well, though I can't admit to fussing much with its nuts and bolts.
