I wasn't able to get to El Burrito Mercado on the west side of St. Paul to take photos before I posted yesterday, but here are two I would have shown. I love Halloween, but I love the Mexican celebration of the religious Day of the Dead even better. The ritual of honoring deceased friends and relatives is so positive rather than the absence or even dread, which is the way our culture approaches death in our society.

Not my favorite holiday but it certainly is colorful. I do like the make-up that adorns these dead folks.
ReplyDeletePerfectly suited to the occasion!
ReplyDeleteMe too Kate! I'm going to check out the Desert Botanical Garden's celebration today.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea they have too. I have a nice little collection of pieces friends have given me over the years.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. The Day of the Dead is a great holiday. Halloween use to be more fun than it is now, or perhaps I now just miss out on the fun part? Like your photos.
ReplyDeleteI like the way the Mexicans do it too, it's not so dark and dreary. I like all the colour in their outfits, celebrating the departed. Very nice, Kate!
ReplyDeleteAgree with your thoughts. Lovely photographs.
ReplyDeleteI'm familiar with the Day of the Dead but I just realized I've never been around any of the actual celebrations which is a surprise because I was around many Hispanics in California. (Probably my typical aversion to crowds.)
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures. This a special celebration, and I see more and more reminders of this holiday that a few years ago, I knew nothing about.
