Fitzgerald Hangout

University Club, 420 Summit Avenue

Scott and Zelda were regulars at the well-heeled University Club, where they attended dances and spent evenings in the bar. Together, the Fitzgeralds once published a spoof newspaper poking fun at University Club regulars, which they distributed at a formal ball.  Credit: http://www.fitzgeraldinsaintpaul.org/a-selection-of-saint-paul-sites-of-f-scott-fitzgerald/

"All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath.

  3. I've always thought this couple to be very interesting. Two talented people who lived in the fast lane. Their life seemed so glamorous but tragically came to an early end. I have not read Fitzgerald . Does anyone have a recommendation for which I should read first?

    1. Janey, Read _The Great Gatsby_, which I taught to American Studies classes many, many times. Google a study guide for the novel and read some of it before you read the novel so that you are familiar with the symbolism, e.g. the green light at the end of the dock. There is lots to think about in that novel. I also taught some of his short stories to middle school students, esp because of his connections to St. Paul and because he attended the school in which I taught. "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" is one of them.

  5. I wonder if clubs like this still exist.
The building is very inviting (at least to me).
