Some people consider poinsettias the official flower of the holiday season. I say, “Move over, poinsettia, and make way for amaryllis!”
I decided to downsize the holidays this year and am eliminating lots of decorations and frills. Difficult to do, though. I recently read an article in the Minneapolis Tribune that promoted using an amaryllis plant instead of poinsettias so I picked up one during a shopping trip to try it out. I love the plant as its buds are unfolding! It's really quite beautiful and after I wrap the pot in decorative paper (or repot it in a glass container, surrounded the blooms with pebbles) it will be a worthy substitute for the traditional poinsettia, which will eventually wilt and fade. According to the article, I can keep it from year to year.
i hope you can keep it going!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Much prettier than the poinsettias, I think.
ReplyDeleteI like them both. Both plants remind me symbolize the season these days. We seem to always get an amaryllis as a gift. Love to see them work til summer.
ReplyDeleteI do believe we had some of these growing in our yard/garden at our first Ocala house. They are very beautiful plants. We also had a lot of poinsettias growing in our yard! Not at our new place, though.
ReplyDeleteIn general there's more variety with amaryllis, too...They can be super beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to watch them bloom; they don't waste any time.
It is beautiful! I have had dozens of them in my flower beds for years and I love it when they bloom in the spring. Some of them are at least 30 years old, given to me by my grandfather from his yard.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE them! I have had them before and they never fail to dazzle.
ReplyDeleteQuite lovely!
ReplyDeleteNice but I still love the poinsettias. I will miss decorating inside the house this year. It was all I could do to put out Snoopy this year.
ReplyDeleteMy preference as well, especially since local shops have begun gluing glitter to the poinsettias... and occasionally spraying them with other colours.
ReplyDeleteOoo Kate ... you didn't split your infinitive!
ReplyDeleteI like both plants, hope your amaryllis will survive year after year. They are really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived down in Mississippi, I had a least one poinsettia that made it through two Christmases.
I like both. For me as a child, it was always poinsettias, though.
ReplyDeleteYes the amaryllis plant is a hit here too, don't know what a poinsettia is, but I like your new plant.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to look for that plant. Its blooms are pretty.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the amaryllis is a great Christmas plant! I do have a poinsettia this year though. It was a gift.
ReplyDeleteI love amaryllis too!

Great idea. I love the spectacular blooms on this plant.
ReplyDeleteOh no Kate, your gorgeous Amaryllis is putting my poinsettia in the shade :)
