The Irish Pub

We will not be going to Ireland 'til June, but I'm already doing research: reading poetry, doing some family genealogical sleuthing, finding contemporary authors, rereading classic Irish fiction and drama, watching Irish films and familiarizing myself with Irish lore and history.  Recently we saw a GREAT film (available on Amazon), The Irish Pub, directed by a Dubliner. I found a map that located the pubs in the film, some of which I know I will visit to lift a Guinness or two.

  1. I am excited for you too! Went to Paris a few years ago with girlfriends . We researched for a whole year before and had monthly meetings. We had almost as much fun getting ready as going!

  5. Ah, Ireland... I've family living there, as does the Great Scot. Depending on what areas you're visiting I *might* even be able to set you up with a (free) guide for a day or two. =D

  7. I was in Ireland years ago and enjoyed it soooo much. Rented a car, and had no trouble driving on 'the wrong side' of the road. You MUST SEE the film "Waking Ned Devine'---a wonderfully delightful tale. Here's where you can read all about it. Amazon has a used one for .80 if you can't find it on Netflix.

  9. Anticipation is such a good thing, Kate. And you will get so much more out of what you see there than you would have if you had not prepared.

  10. This is so nice to do, to read novels about the country an prepare yourself for the travel. This is half the journey already. I am sure you have read Frank McCourt " Angela's ashes".

  13. Anticipation and planning is almost as much fun as the traveling. In addition to "Waking Ned Devine" (great fun, beautiful location, wonderful characters) there's also "The Secret of Roan Inish" directed by John Sayles. Classic Irish storytelling and legend - I particularly like the music.
June is a great time to visit the Burren - an area west of Ennis at the Atlantic underlain by limestone rock formation. I found beautiful wildflowers there in June. Loved it!
