When I saw this photo on Steve Buser's blog I decided to add a photo of my son Karl's huge ferns that grew and grew in the backyard this summer. In addition, I also have two of my own that grew and grew. Now, where will I put them in the house for the winter?! THIS DAY IN MINNESOTA HISTORY: 1863-The first snowfall of the season is the earliest ever recorded in the Twin Cities. (Mn Historical Society) AND 1961 The Minnesota Vikings football team plays its first game, beating the Chicago Bears 37-13 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington.
Those ferns are full indeed. This must have been an especially good year for ferns - I have one on my front porch that looks remarkably like these - and it started out just a couple of fronds.

What to do with giant ferns? Well I had one and it was so large I had to use a library book stand to set it on. The only kind of stand that held a large dictionary. ANyway, I had that and an even larger Spider plant. And I had to decide what to do with them before winter. I sold them at a garage sale. Never will forget a lady who gladly paid forty dollars for the fern and 30 for the spider plant. And that was a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI love the ferns. Lovely Wife grows some big ones like that, though it might be a little easier in the heat and humidity of Florida.
ReplyDeleteLove the note about the Vikings game, though I wasn't born yet, one of my main childhood heroes was Fran Tarkenton, a rookie that year out of the University of Georgia. The Vikes winning that game was a MASSIVE upset over the then almost invincible bears and Mr. Tarkenton passed for a lot of yards in that game. Within a few years the former NFC Central division was known as the black and blue division. I guess both for colors of the teams and for how hard they played one another too.
