Location, location, location

Remember this post? Since I took the first photo, I discovered that Macalester College has sold some older houses on the campus to a local developer for a couple dollars (!!)in order to expand their athletic facilities. The new owner will move all of the houses into neighborhoods, remodel and refurbish them and sell each one at a profit. Without informing the public, the houses have been moved late at night to eliminate too many problems with sightseers. Darn! What a photo that would have been: houses lumbering down the streets of St. Paul. This house now rests on a lot on Snelling Avenue.

  1. Looks lovely.

I am still trying to put the picture of missing UK little girl Madeleine's face into the minds of many, so, if your readers would pop over to Cheltenham to have a look i'd be grateful. You never know she could be in your road or mine by now. We can all look! Thanks. There is now a POSSIBLE, i stress possible, American connection.

It would have been nice to get the move photos. I can't imagine what the crowd would look like if done in the daytime.

    Nice photo.

Thanks for visiting my blog. And for commenting.

  3. OMG, how scary and interesting at the same time. I would be afraid to stand underneath that house.

  4. Too bad on the missed opportunity. Interesting thing that the college is doing and a windfall for somebody.

  5. I've never seen such a thing! Not any damage on the houses after their trip?

  6. This is a very fascinating thing to me, the moving of existing buildings. I sat transfixed watching a show a few years ago about how the lighthouse at Cape Hatteras, N.C. was moved farther away from the shore. Amazing.

I have a friend who was given a house, but when he looked into having it moved, the local government (or whoever) was going to charge $1500 per set of cables and traffic lights that they had to move temporarily to get the house through the streets. To move the house where he wanted to move it was going to cost him $60,000. He declined the free house and it was demolished.

I was so happy to find this picture through a Google search. My mother grew up in this house. I too spent many hours there with my grandparents and have very fond memories of it and the neighborhood. We now live in other states. My mother knew about the house being moved since she saw a photo of it on a Macalester College alumni magazine. Your picture is wonderful.

There have been quite a few houses in my town of Wooster, Ohio that were moved. Several were for Habitat for Humanity. One was a beautiful old Victorian that was saved from demolition.

    Thanks for the photo!
