Because of our nasty winter weather and unpleasant driving conditions, I had been putting my "Friday Field Trips" on hold, but I resumed last week with a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I spent some time in the outstanding Chinese travelling exhibit (more on that later), and on my way out I walked through this small, delightful exhibit, "I Am Somali." The bright, vivid colours in the paintings are fantastic, depicting part of their history. The Twin Cities is an area that has welcomed immigrants with with open arms, and we have the largest Somali community in the United States. Take that, Mr. Trump!!
That is a pleasant sight on a cold morning! We have a large community from Somali here in Toronto too.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the Twin Cities for a few years but the last few times we were there, we took cabs from the airport and in each case the drivers were Somali.
ReplyDeleteThe painting by Aziz Osman makes me wonder about the native country longing these Somalis have in the frozen north country of the U.S.A.
ReplyDeleteQuite a vivid painting, Kate!
ReplyDeleteI love the painting, so colourful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a different environment from MSP! It must be an overwhelming adjustment yet *rump and his ilk are so intent on demonizing immigrants. Small minds, cruel hearts.
