Seamus' Best Friend!

The Irish Wolfhound (IrishCú FaoilIrish pronunciation: [ˈkuː ˈfˠiːlʲ]) is a breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), specifically a sighthound. The name originates from its purpose (wolf hunting with dogs) rather than from its appearance. The breed was originally developed from war hounds to one used for hunting and guarding. Irish Wolfhounds can be an imposing sight due to their formidable size; they are the tallest of all dog breeds.[1]

For lots of good information on the breed, go here.

  1. Gosh they are amazing looking dogs Kate.. are they really the tallest dog breed? My next door neighbour a while back had two Great Danes that looked like horses :)

    1. I am acquainted with the breed, but am not an expert. When standing on their hind quarters, they are the tallest canine. I do not know how else they are measured. They are so gentle, real gentle giants. Unfortunately their life span is short because of their size.

    2. Thanks Kate, that was an informative link, 6 to 8 years, that really is rather a short life span.
