  3. I am always surprised to see shoeshine stands at airports. They seem so old-fashioned, but I notice that they are almost always busy.

Kate, I just read an article about retirees seeing the world that reminded me of you. There is a link for a blog in it that might be of interest, as well. The article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390443720204578004131575356160.html; and the blog: http://homefreeadventures.com/.

  4. When I was working in St. Louis back in the 90's, there was a shoeshine man in the lobby of the building where I worked. One day, I decided that my shoes needed a little buffing up so I went down for a shine. The man was so nice but, a bit on the nervous side. He told me he had never shined a woman's shoes before. It was a first for him.

  5. There was a restaurant in Phoenix where you could take off your shoes and have them shined while you ate your lunch in your socks.

  6. I noticed an active shoeshine business in the DFW airport last week. I guess Texans still like sparkling cowboy boots!

  7. Very interesting. I haven't seen one of these shoeshine stands in years - I think the last one was in an airport. They do a great job, though!

  11. LOVE the shot from the front! Tells a great story. And my husband gets his shoes shined at the airport all the time. :) Not obsolete yet.

  13. I sure hope this is not obsolete. Whenever I find a shoeshine guy in the airport, I jump for joy and wait for a seat to open. It is like washing a car . . . sure, I can do it myself, and I do so on occasion, but someone with the right materials and a desire to do this professionally can do it MUCH better than I can.
