Because I had an early morning appointment, at 7:30 am I drove past this yearly "prank" visited upon some hapless home owner. I laughed and stopped to talk to the young man who was busily trying to clean up the mess (probably on orders of his angry parents). Johnny, a high school junior at a neighborhood school, was the target by his buddies, I'm sure. As a former teacher of kids that age, I was amused. When I related the scene to my husband, his reaction was quite different. He didn't think it was at all funny, considering the clean-up job. I'd rather see kids doing that, tho, than smoking pot or getting into drugs. I continue to laugh as I drive by since it takes awhile for the clean-up job. Perhaps I'm the only adult who thinks it's funny?!
And, since this is National Poetry Day with the theme of "home," ...
"'Home is the place where, when you have to go there,/They have to take you in.'"
Robert Frost, "The Death of the Hired Man"
Happy to say, I never felt his pain.
ReplyDeleteI seem to have a few high school memories like that - no more details though....
ReplyDelete(And as long as it doesn't happen to me, yes, I think it's kinda funny)
I agree with you! The choice of FUN here is absolutely better than the smoke n drugs thing..
ReplyDeletePixellicious Photos
I haven't seen one of these activities in a long time. It's extremely hard to clean this up from trees but, imagine cleaning it up from cactus.
ReplyDeleteKate, I lived through it once as a teenage recipient and as a parent (twice). I laughed at each "rolling" because it really does have an artistic feel with the curtains of TP. It does not last forever.
ReplyDeleteLove the "home is where" quote which I had heard but forgotten. Very appropriate!
Genie
Ooo not nice. Happy to say I never did that and was never the victim of.
ReplyDeleteIf it was orange, they could claim it as installation sculpture and say, "Christo was here!"
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's not the worst thing kids could do and it is a pretty funny sight!
ReplyDeleteI always thought of it as a badge of honor!!! I was a recipient once, though not as wonderful a job as this one!!! Don't know if I'd think the same way as a parent, as I never had kids of my own...but as Genie says...it's not permanent...and it's a heck of a lot better than graffiti or drugs or drinking or....
ReplyDeleteI have seen this in yards around here but not for many years. It is kind of funny if it isn't in my yard but I just think it's a waste of good TP.
ReplyDeleteNever had it done or did it myself, but it could have been worse--at least their yard wasn't sporked and their cars weren't Saran Wrapped!
ReplyDeleteWe were always partial to planting people's yards with gardens of plastic forks, spoons and knives. More subtle. Gardens of those little colored plastic marker flags would have been better, but more expensive. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat is a ton of toilet paper....wow!
