We haven't had a postcard quiz for a long time now. Because y'all are so smart, I'm going to ask that you be SPECIFIC. The
first one who can correctly and specifically identify what this child is doing will receive a fantastic postcard from St. Paul, Minnesota USA!!
May be she is turning a hand crank on a cheese press? I guess it has to do with a farm task given your previous photo.
ReplyDeleteOld fashion water pump from an aquifer?
ReplyDeleteOh, I can be very specific about this: I will not receive a fantastic card from St. Paul because I really have no idea what that beautiful child is doing! Shucks. :[
ReplyDeleteShe's opening the valve on the white water tank in the background. She's very proud of herself for being able to do this because she's making sure that the sheep have water to drink.
ReplyDeleteOh, before I forget, those leaves that appear pink are more than likely the undersides of some red ones. I'll get a better photo soon.
I'd say that she is turning a cider press - "mashing" apples to make apple cider.
ReplyDeleteshe's drawing water from a well.
ReplyDeleteShe is turning the handle on an old-fashioned water pump. Oh how I love quizzes!!! Thanks for giving it to us!
ReplyDeleteNikon beat me to my answer, darn. Cute picture of your Grandaughter, Kate.
ReplyDeleteOh, Nikon got in with my idea before I made it over! I think the apple squashing thing is right.
ReplyDeleteToo late for me, I think Lynette gave the good answer, the axe sems to be too small for a waterpump as fars as I know our french cyclar water pump.
ReplyDeleteNice picture of a nice young "demoiselle".
Le retour du jeux de la Carte postale ;o)
ReplyDeletebelle photo, on dirait une barre pour conduire un bateau et non pas une voiture
The return of the postal card decks; O)
beautiful photograph, one would say a bar to lead a boat and not a car
This is Olivia and SPECIFICALLY she is applying force via leverage to a wheel in order to change its relative tangent.
ReplyDeleteWhat the INDIRECT result of this application of force is, I haven't a clue, but that doesn't really matter, because that wasn't the question...
Miss???
Love quizzes. I don't know the answer but am sure someone before me has got it right. Love the photo. Keep the quizzes coming.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is from my very young years when I remember being on a road grader that had a wheel like that for making the blade angle while they graded the road. I got to play on it rarely and I'm sure that's not it, but it's my guess anyway!
ReplyDeleteHello Kate,
ReplyDeleteSorry we've been very busy and unfortunately away from the blogosphere for a while! I love this photo and this quiz is a great idea. As some said and considering the time of the year, I would also say that this cute little girl is operating a cider press.
Sorry Z, Photowannabe, and Alex but Nikon beat you to it!! He gets the fantastic postcard I promised as soon as he sends me his address offline. Next week I'll have a quiz which I hope will stump you much longer than this one. Try again!!
ReplyDeleteKate - glad someone already won your contest because, city boy that I am, I didn't have a clue. Anyway, thanks for your comment today and others recently. I've had alligator once or twice in Florida. It has a mild flavor and (imagine!) actually does taste somewhat like chicken.
ReplyDeleteI didn't try any after I took the photo. Our little Oktoberfest was going on in the park next to the market and I'd just had a great big bratwurst.
It's a beautiful photo!
ReplyDeleteI would never have guessed a cider press. I have been around them but those were really large and run by an engine. I suppose the one she has could also be run by an engine as the wheel is big enough for a good-sized belt.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least I knew it was OLIVIA! Do I win anything ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate!
ReplyDeleteCute photo, by the way, cute kid!!
Argh!! I can't tell what the girl is doing, but I lvoe this picture. Wonderfully taken shot.
ReplyDeleteTake care
I was thinking a hand crank on one of those trains that you stand on.
ReplyDeleteI would have guessed wrongly along with lynette et al
ReplyDeleteI would not have had a clue but it's a great photo!
ReplyDeleteAh! I stumbled across your blog (linked from the Paris Daily Photo blog) and I scrolled down to find this picture! I worked with Olivia this summer so I was pretty surprised to randomly find her online!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say cider press, too, but others have already said it. I love the photo with the focus on the child.
