A Stoned House

A friend of mine and I have recently begun to walk in neighborhoods that are unfamiliar to us. The gardens and houses we've seen are varied and different. This one is unusual because of the number of stones used in the landscaping. What do you think of it?

  1. I rather like flat stones as architectural landscaping features much more than these round ones.

  2. Well, not really my taste, but I'd say they've been placed there with lots of loving care. maybe they yearn to build a Yorkshire-style drystone farm wall?

  3. I bet it took some work doing those stones.

  4. Perhaps some plants tumbling over to soften the effect and some pots on the steps. Or am I being too Mediterranean?

I don't think I have ever seen so many stones or rocks as I am looking at in this photograph. It is a nice home and a masons dream job.

My father's farm where he was born was at the end of a glacier so when it began to recede it left all the rocks and stones and boulders there. He and his family spent their lifetime picking up stones and making fences out of them. And they are still coming to the surface on that farm.

I hope you get to see the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak that came to Brookville, Ohio yesterday. It is the first one I have seen since we moved here 44 years ago.

  7. I love stone fences (reminds me of Ireland), but this is a bit stark and just too much of a good thing, you know what I mean ;-)

  8. That's a lot of rocks! I wonder if they are working towards a terraced effect?

  9. The house it's self is rather interesting. Simple but powerful.

  11. Kate - is the reference only obvious to those of us of a certain age? Not particularly how I would want my home (think of all those stairs to the door for those of us of a certain age) but it bespeaks either solidity or the risk of landslide. I can't decide which.

  13. I definitely like the house because its big big big - threee stories big - but i dunno - I have mixed feelings about the stone - I would say i llike stones but maybe not all that much - but surely if i was given this house, I would not complain - its a beautiful place to live and very spacious!

  14. I love stones but this seems a bit much to me. I'd sure hate to have to move them though.
