Rare Icelandic Horses

We are vacationing on Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin with our grandkids. Whenever we stay, my husband and granddaughter take a trail ride on the rare Icelandic horses at Field Wood Farm.

Most of the people who settled on the island were Scandinavian immigrants, especially Icelanders. Today, Washington Island is one of the oldest Icelandic communities in the United States and among the largest outside of Iceland itself.

For a fascinating history of the Island, check this site.

  11. You are in such an interesting place but I imagine it'd be pretty cold? Especially compared to Mazatlan. Beautiful horses. I wish I knew more about horses - they seem to have v small ears.

  14. This is the oddest thing - My family is from Washington Island! In fact, the Lutheran Church there was built on land from one great-grandfather, by my other great-grandfather! I just happened on your blog and felt compelled to write. :)
If you go to Rock Island, say hello to the head ranger there, Kirby Foss...He's my cousin.
Have a ball! The Island is a great place to be!
