Hasta la Vista, Baby!!

Cuba and Castro,
Economic Embargo
I'll See For Myself!

Today I'm leaving with a group on a cultural tour to Cuba, visiting both Havana and Trinidad.  We'll visit homes, a primary school, a pharmacy and several churches and historical sites. My back pack that I will give away is filled with children's books in Spanish, children's vitamins, bars of soap which Cubans love, toothbrushes and toothpaste (donated by my dentist) and over the counter meds to give to the good people of Cuba whom we will met. I also intend to go out dancing!  Woooo! Hoooo!

My sincere wish is that the US would discontinue the economic embargo, which is now over 50 years old.

I will not be taking my laptop nor will I have ready access to internet.  I will try to schedule as many posts as I can before I leave.  If you visit my blog while I'm gone, I promise that I will post some great Cuban photos after I return!!

  1. Kate that sounds absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to see Cuba (and Trinidad) through your eyes and lens! The gifts you are taking are very thoughtful.

Be safe and have a wonderful time; I can't imagine a better goodwill 'ambassador' than you! *hugs*

  6. What a terrific tour to be taken by someone like yourself who really cares about other people! Muy bueno!

I agree with you about the embargo. Sometimes our foreign policies really boomerang.

Have a wonderful trip and we'll be looking for your Cuba photos. Have a real Cuban sandwich for me, OK?

  10. Enjoy, enjoy! In 1959 right before Castro's takeover, my mother, two sisters, aunt, uncle and two cousins .. made the short flight from Miami to Havana. We were among the last of the Americans to visit. One week of a heavenly Havana, a friendly beautiful city full of the most charming people. I would love to return one day.

  11. We will really be looking forward to your photos upon you return.

You are correct that it is long past time to help the Cuban people by normalizing relations. The lessons of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union show that contact with people and commerce from democracies leads to reform and human rights more than does isolation. It is only a matter of time for Cuba and, later, ultimately, China, to join the family of nations in allowing greater human rights.
