Historical Savannah Sign

The wonderful, friendly man who lives next door to our rental in Savannah explained the meaning of this sign affixed to his house.  At one time in the history of the city, any dwelling with this sign had to be helped first in the event of a fire involving several buildings.  Obviously it no longer is accurate and the plaque is now just an artifact, but imagine!!

  1. Interesting... I wonder who and what determined the right to get a sign like this

  5. Fascinating! I understand that in the "olden" days fire was a terror that people feared greatly and the means of combating fires was not as advanced as they are today. Great find, Kate!

Hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!

It was common in the UK in the 17C that only those houses covered by insurance would e served by firefighters (who were employed by insurance companies. It wasn't until the 18C in France that became a public service.

I read recently that a city fire brigade in TN refused to put out a residential fire because the owner had missed a fire levy payment - just stood there, stopped the fire from spreading and watched a house burn to the ground.

  10. That seems a bit unfair. Very interesting find.

  11. There was an incident just a few years ago about fire fighters not saving a house that had not paid for the service.

Great experience to stay in the house you showed yesterday.

  12. Wow. This is an eye-opener, including comments that fill in more detail. It sure makes me glad I've paid my taxes, and that fire service here seems to be for everyone. I wonder what the "UF" stands for.

Happy holidays to you, Kate! I'm enjoying your latest trip.

  13. Fascinating. But what if you did not have such a sign....and wonder what the criteria was to get such status in the community. Have a wonderful Easter break and continue to enjoy your trip Kate. Thanks for sharing the journey of your travels.
