ONLY a few!: ABC WEDNESDAY 'O'
The Corps of Cadets at The Citadel was all male until 1995 when Shannon Faulkner won a legal battle to enroll but she dropped out after less than a week. A Supreme Court ruling in a discrimination lawsuit against VMI eventually compelled the school to admit women and the first group of 4 female cadets matriculated in August, 1996. Using credits from another college Nancy Mace completed her degree in 3 years and became the first female graduate in Corps history on May 9, 1999; women currently comprise 7% of cadets.

ReplyDelete7% de femme chez les cadets, c'est pas beaucoup mais c'est un debut
Go, Girls!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have been be able to stand the pace when I was young but some people are tougher than me and good luck to them. It's not how I'd like to spend my life, have to admit but it makes me see red when people who are capable are denied the chance to do what is in them.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kate! You are teaching me some of my own city history! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe 7% today owe gratitude to the few pioneers who broke the gender barrier.
ReplyDeleteSo do the 93%.
Great pictures, it is a relatively long time that we also have women in every corps...
ReplyDeleteHang in there girls!
ReplyDeleteThose would be a strong group of women. Thanks for all the info.
ReplyDeleteBrave women like this amaze me. Bravo to them all.

More power to the 7%! Can't imagine why they want to go to the Citadel or to any military organization, but for those that do, I wish them well!
ReplyDeleteThose barriers come down slowly. When I began working women only made about 50% of what men earned. I read recently the gap is down to 23% less.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt the cadets have to work extra hard to "prove" themselves. I wish them well!
I remember Shannon Faulkner. Glad things are better.

I can imagine this place doesn't appeal to most women, but I'm glad it's open for those who want to attend.
ReplyDeleteA tough road to choose to go down-takes a tremendous amount of commitment!
ReplyDeleteOutstanding women. Nice capture.

Now that's a % I could get to like!
ReplyDeleteShe looks tough.
ReplyDeleteHurray for those courageous women who made it through the tough program. I imagine that 7% will rise over the years.
