ABC Wednesday-"R" RESPECTFUL RIDERS

Both yesterday and today I decided to post photos for  ABC Wednesday. Last Sunday I posted this photo of a real Bozo who broke all the safety rules of the road for cyclists. By contrast on the same day and on the same street, these two RESPECTED all the safety rules that put no-one at risk.  Well...ALMOST since she is not wearing a helmet, which I've discovered is a Minnesota law! After observing the "bozo" I decided to read the law to be sure that I know what they are and to follow them to stay as safe as possible. There are too many "ghost bikes" standing alone.  Love riding my bike because  it's a recreational sport that can be healthy, convenient, and fun for all!

To see more photos from bloggers from around the world who participate in ABC Wednesday,  go here and enjoy.

  2. I have to ride my bike to work every day (although I now have my parents' car on loan for a few weeks) and have never used a helmet! Mind you, we have separate cycle roads, so you're hardly in the same road as cars...

  6. I appreciate your post on this & the bozo. I love riding my bike too & it's a good idea to review the rules of the road to keep us all safe.

  8. Just wanted to throw out that you might be mildly interested in ChipSeal's blog for a view of someone trying to do hardcore vehicular bike commuting in somewhat adverse conditions. (different issues than the recreational riders) He talks a lot about the regs, and his occasional struggle to educate his local police about them. There are of course many others, but ChipSeal is the one I remember since he's also a regular poster on bikeforums. Minnesota also has a lot of dedicated bike commuters facing similar situations.

hope you're enjoying May. If I was in Minnesota I'd be mourning the passing of spring, but looking forward to some towering thunderstorms! (we don't get those here either)

  9. Like your choice of R for Respect. Too bad the woman isn't wearing her helmet too.

  10. NY law doesn't require helmets for those over 14. Since I was almost a ghost rider myself, I ALWAYS wear one.

  11. "she is not wearing a helmet, which I've discovered is a Minnesota law!"

Are you sure? Following the links on Mn/DOT’s Bicycling Road Rules page, I don't see anything mentioned. More importantly, searching for "helmet" in Chap. 169, Traffic Regulations, of Minn. Statutes finds nothing.

  12. I just rechecked the same site as you mentioned which I had read earlier. You're correct; there is no mention of a helmet law. I guess common sense influenced my comment; however, all the other rules I mentioned on both this and the Bozo post are accurate. I tried to send you a personal message, but the link you provided (DI) does not have an available profile nor blog that I could access. Normally, I would not print your comment because of that, but I think its important to correct the error.
