A Saint Paul Landmark

Recently Molly of A Photo a Day in St. Paul posted her shot of the Cathedral and the Capitol buildings so I thought I'd add this one of the imposing Cathedral.

Architecture

The Cathedral of St. Paul is considered to be one of the most beautiful cathedrals in America. The design is in the Beaux-Art style and was inspired by Renaissance cathedrals in France. The exterior is Minnesotan St. Cloud granite. The interior walls are American Travertine from Mankato, Minnesota, and the interior columns are made of several types of marble.Topping the Cathedral is a 120-foot wide copper dome. A lantern on top of the dome brings the total height of the Cathedral to 306 feet tall from the base to the top of the lantern.

To learn more of its history and to see the copper dome, go here.

  1. This sounds like a beautiful place to visit. The copper dome must be a scarab green by now unless they can keep it from tarnishing. The dome of the government building in
west Virginia's capitol is gold leaf of all things. Or was. It might be gold paint now.

  2. Forgot to mention that our dogs were always afraid of lightening and thunder and when they got older and could no longer hear very well, most of their fears subsided but only after the cataracts grew were they in their own world and the heavenly storms no longer bothered them.

  3. Wow, that is HUGE! Your pedestrian gives us a good gauge of size. The stone used really sets it apart from European cathedrals and sets it squarely in your neck of the woods.

  4. This does indeed look like something you would expect to see in Europe, not the USA.

  6. I love how this cathedral sits atop a hill so that it dominates the area. It was quite a long time ago that I went inside, but I remember it was beautiful.

  7. That's really impressive! Especially for an American cathedral. I bet you could transplant this to a European city and it would not look one bit out of place.

  8. I love this cathedral, inside and out. A nice place to visit and silently walk through, soaking up the ambiance, and then sit among its quiet wonder.

  9. It's gorgeous, Kate! When was it built? I also like the yard design around it.

  12. The man walking adds so much scale to the photo! Keep supporting those libraries. They are in danger with this financial crisis!
