Humphrey Memorial

Last Sunday I posted a tribute memorial photo of Paul Wellstone,  a Minnesota politician. Today I would like to honour another famous politician, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey. and his wife Muriel.

Oysterfest 2018

Despite the early snowfall that luckily melted by mid-afternoon and the cool temperature, the annual outdoor OysterFest organised by the Meritage restaurant in downtown St. Paul was enjoyed by a large crowd of people on Sunday. White tents were set up to shelter those who expertly shucked the oysters for the hungry gourmets who waited patiently in line for the delicacies  supplied by The Fish Guys.  The well-organised event also had beverage tents, delectable crepes, an oyster store, a shucking showdown stage, a band and fire pits to help keep us warm.  DH and I had a great time!

Paul David Wellstone (July 21, 1944 – October 25, 2002) was an American academic, author, and politician who represented Minnesota in the United States Senate from 1991 until he was killed in a plane crash in Eveleth, Minnesota, in 2002. A member of the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, Wellstone was a leader of the progressive wing of the national Democratic Party.

On October 25, 2002, Wellstone, along with seven others, died in an airplane crash in northern Minnesota, at 10:22 a.m. He was 58 years old. The other victims were his wife, Sheila; one of his three children, Marcia; the two pilots, and campaign staffers Mary McEfoy, Tom Lapic and Will McLaughlin. The airplane was en route to Eveleth, where Wellstone was to attend the funeral of Martin Rukavina, a steelworker whose son Tom Rukavina served in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Wellstone decided to go to the funeral instead of a rally and fundraiser in Minneapolis attended by Mondale and fellow Senator Ted Kennedy. He was to debate Norm Coleman in Duluth, Minnesota, that same night.

Autumn finery

Although these trees are lovely in all of their autumn finery, most of the colours on other  trees are not as prolific and beautiful. The wind and rain has stripped many of the leaves off the trees in our neighbourhood.

You may notice that the house in the top photo looks tilted.  Unfortunately, I need a new computer for a lot of different reasons. The one I am using refuses to allow me to edit my photos.  I may be offline for awhile while I make a computer decision.

About 250 acres in size, Lakewood memorializes the dead with more than 100,000 monuments and markers. Long considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country, it was modeled after the rural cemeteries of 19th-century France, such as Père-Lachaise in Paris. When Lakewood was established in 1871 rural cemeteries were becoming more popular as part of a growing trend away from churchyard burials in the heart of the city.

A Common Sign-A Common Complaint

This message is not unusual in public areas, but I think it covers everything: 

1. Be a good neighbour

2. Leash your pet

3. Clean up 

4. Bag the poop

The only instruction missing is to "dispose of it properly!" Members in my neighbourhood facebook group often complain that dog owners will blithely throw the bag into any garbage can they might walk past. My own neighbours can rest easy: when on our morning walks, Wild Wendy uses the boulevard side of the grass for her toilete, and I take the bag home with me. Yes, all of us should be Good Neighbors!!

Clear Instructions

OUR RIDE/WALK--I often take Wild Wendy a few blocks from our house to a different area so that she can have new places to explore and smell. There are few things less desolate-looking than an outdoor summer pool area after the season ends. It looked both empty and bleak, but I saw this marvellous mural/sign by the entrance. No child can cry or wheedle his/her way into the area that contains the wonderful curved slide into the pool because the instructions are clear.

More green space

As autumn is fast approaching with the change of colours, I am looking at the greenery with a different eye, wishing this season would last longer. These are everyday images I might pass by if it were not for my longing to stay green!

I have posted a photo of this sweet little garden house before but the yard was recently cleared of overgrown foliage, which changed the place considerably.  It is a lovely spot that the owner shares with the neighbourhood. I love to sit at the bottom of the hillside,  which conveniently is across from my own yard. It's a lovely spot to meditate or read or write--or just simply relax!

Characters

Schultz's characters are immortalised with statues scattered throughout our city. This is a perfect description of "love"--Schroeder is in love with Beethoven and Lucy is in love with Schroeder.  Why so many character-statues? Well, Charles M. Schultz was one of "our boys"-- learn more about him here.

 While on my morning walks, I can tell that autumn weather definitely is here by the decorations at the front entrance of the homes.

Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel

Lakewood Cemetery is a large private, non-sectarian cemetery located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It is located at 3600 Hennepin Avenue at the southern end of the Uptown area. It is noted for its chapel which is on the National Register of Historic Places and was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey.

I enrolled in two OLLI courses during this session: Landscape photography and Lakewood Cemetery.
I LOVE both of them. If I learn some technical aspects of photograph, I hope that my photography will improve. Today I went to the first session of Lakewood Cemetery, the premier location for one's last resting place. It has a fascinating history and it is landscaped beautifully.  The chapel is filled with mosaic art on the dome and throughout the interior.

Celebrate CLA!!

While on the University of Minnesota campus recently, I saw this sign celebrating the 150th anniversary of the College of Liberal Arts.  Lately I have been reading with dismay that enrollment in liberal arts has been steadily declining over the past decade, which is a terrible loss to our society. I want to give a "shout out" to liberal arts; I loved my time at the University, some of the most valuable years in my life. I feel that it has made me a better person and has given me an appreciation for our culture and an avid interest in the world, which I shared with young people during my 30 years as a classroom teacher (also some of the best years of my life!).

A Common Sign

This is a common traffic sign, but it is attached to a very uncommon, decorative  metal post. I was surprised to see this creative pole in a neighbourhood not far from my house.  As I drove around, I noted that there were several of these scattered on different corners.  I wonder how the city approved these, and I should probably make some calls to find out. I'm curious to learn how this happened.

ADDED LATER: This is a project which is part of a Public Art program, funded by the city of St. Paul. A neighbourhood group helped me identify the artist, Lisa Elias, a Minneapolis artist.  Read about her here.

Following is Elias' statement about these signs: Our goal is to re-imagine streetscape elements in residential neighborhoods, give them a visual purpose without loosing important function and reveal a place for beauty. This past summer I installed almost 100 forged stop sign post for the City of St. Paul in our efforts of making everyday objects a work of art.
