Pat Conroy

The Talking Volumes website described the writer Pat Conroy, the fourth writer on its program this year, by explaining that he "will discuss his new book, The Death of Santini, a memoir that is hotly anticipated by fans of The Great Santini. Conroy said his father “loathed my depiction of him in the The Great Santini, and he set out to prove me wrong by turning himself into something that was recognizably human. It’s the great surprise of my life that I ended up loving him so much.”

After he and Kerri Miller charmed a sold-out crowd of faithful readers at the Fitzgerald Theatre in downtown St. Paul on Tuesday night, Conroy signed books for hundreds of people who stood in line for his autograph. We all got our money's worth and then some!

  1. I coached basketball for fifteen years oddly enough at the later part of my coaching career. I absolutely loved Conroy's book about his college basketball days at the Citadel.

  2. Wow, what an event! :-)

I love "The Great Santini", both book and movie. So good to hear that it helped Pat Conroy's father reconnecting with his son. And I am looking forward to reading his new novel, will go on my Christmas wish list. Thank you,
    cheers,

  6. This is a nice connection with your time in Charleston. I have enjoyed several Conroy books, but The Great Santini was not as high on my list as others, like South of Broad. I just finished another memoir by a successful novelist about his struggles with a difficult parent -- Elsewhere, by Richard Russo -- so I don't know if I will dive into this most recent Conroy work.
