A Familiar Summer Sight

Every little boy's dream job (or is this a sexist statement?). Lake Street, a main artery between the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, is being torn up this summer. The concentration on this worker's face indicates the need to pay close attention. To see some of the work he did, check here.

  1. Seems the kind of picture my grandson would be excited about. Bob the Builder lives!

Well it could be considered that way, Kate, but it has been a traditional job for me for as long as I can remember. I must say, however, that these days I see the ladies doing all of the heavy-lifting jobs and driving 18-wheelers and down in the ditches repairing sewers. They do almost everything and do it very well and you seldom see them standing around rubbing their bellies while smoking a cigarette and squeezing an empty beer can. The ladies are still are number one in delivering babies.

    Have a nice weekend.

  5. Kate, I had to come back to tell you, I love your poem about the horses. Can I post it on my blog for my sister? I will direct people back here to your site.

  6. Perhaps this man's "little-boy-dream" is being lived out fully today. I know my grandson likes "diggers", as he calls them, a million times more than my grand-daughters.

  7. I do agree with you, Kate, about little boy's dream job! My son has been offered all the Playmobil around this topic when he was between 2 and 8 years...It reminds me of how many hours we spend on the beach with tiny bulldozers, forklift trucks and other engines...Have a nice weekend!

  12. Hey, I thought being a locomotive engineer was every little boy's (and a few little girl's) dream career?! Choo choo! Oh wait, we're not doing trains today. Okay, I guess we do have to get work done around town. A few of these diggers and excavators around Villigen as well, though I've done my best not to show them.

  13. I like the composition of this shot and as you say, the concentration on his face.
I do think boys, dirt and big machinery go hand in hand and its not a sexist remark. I think its just the way guys are put together.

  14. I never dreamt of digging! Rather driving trains or to be a captain of a cargo vessel! So many dreams never come true!

  15. Playing with dirt was a very common pastime for me when I was a kid.
I never wanted to do it as a profession - but it does pay very well :)
