Building the Ice Castle

Looks like the Ice Castle will be ready on time for the Winter Carnival in St Paul and the Super Bowl in Minneapolis!  The construction site in St Paul's downtown Rice Park was a busy hive of activity Sunday morning when I visited, intent on getting some pictures.  Barriers and fences surrounding the equipment, workers, and blocks of ice made photographing a little difficult, but I enjoyed watching the work-in-progress.

The work crew not only kept an eye on the blocks of unused ice, monitored moving the building blocks to the site and supervised the project.

  2. I've never seen the ice castle, but I've heard about it. What a wonderful construction. After being gone from Minnesota for so many years, it's hard to imagine a place where it's cold enough to build such a castle! :)

  3. It's a lot of work going into that. Teams here are getting things set up for Winterlude in February.

  5. You definitely have the brutal cold weather to build an ice castle. It will look fantastic when it's done. Fairbanks used to have the ice carving world championships every winter. It was always a nice event to go and see.
