Nordic

Nordic: A Photographic Essay of Landscapes, Food, and People, by Magnus Nilsson

This very fine exhibit at the American Swedish Institute closed last Sunday after a very successful  run from June 2 - August 14.  Taking photos there is difficult because of the poor lighting in spots and glaring lights in others, but after slanting the direction, I was able to eliminate a few of the issues that spoil the shots I took. There still were many more enormously sized photos I wanted to photograph but was unable to do so.  Much to my surprise I learned that 32-year-old Nilsson is also a well-known and highly regarded chef in Sweden as well as a photographer.  Several of his cookbooks were in the gift shop (and on Amazon, too), but I was intrigued by the one pictured below.  It's a tome of over 700 pages. Nillson is an interesting guy; learn more about him here.

  2. I'm surprised that photography was allowed in the exhibit. I agree, it is difficult to get good shots in these situations but you did get some nice ones to share.

  4. This post really surprised me. I have been watching a wonderful series on Netflix called Chef's Table. Each episode is an hour long documentary about a chef who is considered one of the world's best. Nilsson was one of chef's in the series. I watched his episode around three weeks ago. I remember sending a comment to Stefan about watching it and enjoying how he created such success at a restaurant located in such a remote area. I had no idea he also was a photographer. I don't remember that being mentioned in the documentary at all. I feel like this is one of those "small world" moments.

  14. The Swedes do have a fantastic reputation for their food! And I agree it's hard to get the right angle when taking shots of framed photos.

  18. It took me a long moment to realize you took a photo of Nillson's photo. :-) I wonder if the area was experiencing a drought when he took the shot. I also wonder what dishes he may have thought about as he gazed at the scenery.
