One of Our Boys!

On several Friday mornings during the winter concert season my DH and I attend the St. Paul Chamber orchestra. Across the street from the beautiful Ordway Center is a small jewel of a park that is surrounded on all four sides by the Ordway, Larkmark Center, the Central Library, and the St. Paul Hotel. In addition to beautiful flowers the park contains several sculptures that depict part of the city's history, several of which I have already posted but my favorite is "one of our boys", FScott Fitzgerald. My dear husband who wrote his college thesis on This Side of Paradise is amused because I always stop to say "hello" and have a brief conversation with Scott. Often I tell him how much my students enjoyed reading The Great Gatsby and sometimes quote a line or two from the novel. What could be better: great music and great literature, coming together in one day...how I love it!

  1. That sounds like a delightful way to spend some time. I think F.Scott waits eagerly for you to stop by and spend a little time with him, or at least it appears that way..

  3. LOvely to see, Kate. I really truly believe that Gatsby IS the Great American Novel. Every time you read it there is more in there.

With the nouveau spivs of Lehmann Bros and the crooks behind low doc loans daily in the news, what has changed?

I saw one of my heroines, germaine Greer on a book show the other day, talking about a modern novelist, saying the author should not write asingle word for 12 months, and spend the whole time reading Fitzgerald to learn how to construct a sentence, and convey Big Ideas with skill and economy.

I have read Jonathan Franzen and Don de Lillo and I love them both, but to me Fitzgerald's mantle is as yet unassailed. (Though Steinbeck is up there too)

  8. Great statue. I swear I must be the only English major in America who didn't like GATSBY. Sorry, Jane Austen is more my speed. :-]

  10. I have to admit, until this photo, I've never noticed quite how uneven the texture is. There are pits, bumps and flaws, but seen from a distance, it all looks perfect.

    A great vantage point.

  11. I remember when you posted F Scott F before - perhaps this very sculpture. One of my all-time favourite authors. I love The Great Gatsby but I'm not sure I don't prefer Tender is the Night even more.
