SKY

Sculpture: SKY
Artist: Georgette Sosin
Media: Sculpture: Welded aluminum
Base: Concrete
Location: Kellogg Mall Park - Ramsey County Detention Center Plaza

This sculpture consists of two geometric shapes twisting up to touch points at the height of the sculpture. A plaque carries the inscription:

And grant our prayers for lasting
peace, for every nation everywhere.

This sculpture was presented to the people of Ramsey County by the Zonta Club of Saint Paul in May 1981. (St. Paul Parks and Recreation website)

I've seen this sculpture and have attempted to photograph it numerous times. Today's is the most satisfactory of the snaps although it doesn't really show the burnished gold colour (gray day!). The annoying lines behind it are electrical. I've lived here in St. Paul for a long time, but was not aware of the Zonta Club. Read about this international group here! To see the Park Tower Condos of yesterday's post photographed at a slightly different angle behind the sculpture, click here!

  1. That is a nice sculpture, from a nice angle.
The electrical lines are evenly spaced, so it is not bad in terms of composition! It almost looks like a building with shiny windows behind the sculpture.

  3. Kate, the information about the Zonta club was new to me. I checked out the international website...and apparently there are only 4 clubs in all of Washington State.
The sculpture is wonderful and I love the inscription.

  5. Great sculpture against the sky, the electrical lines adds a fine geometric background! [Gran escultura contrastando con el cielo, incluso los cables electricos le añaden un buen fondo geometrico]. Saludos.

It is a good photograph of a difficult subject. I am not nuts about modern art in sculpture but this photo of this piece is nice enough to make me look the artist up.

  12. I also like the sculpture, but it's also interesting to see how it fits in the surrounding and I liked to see the combined sculpture / building picture under your link!

I have to say also like jb,this picture was at once reminiscent those paper boats, which we made as our childhood, but these shapes are beautiful in this sculpture.
I believe, it`s great also, if I could see it in person!

  18. Leena, I so agree. I'd not have thought of that had you not written it. Paper boats indeed.

Love the inscription. Can't honestly say the sculpture appeals - it's somehow too angular for me - no soft lines but perhaps that's the point.

Art is so personal isn't it? How we perceive it.

  19. Actually the electrical lines create an interesting grid for the sculpture. I like the grey tones too.

  21. I agree with nikon - I actually like the phone lines.

I have heard of the Zonta club and we used to have them in Australia but not sure if we still do.
