National Register of Historical Places

"Mickey’s Diner was prefabricated in New Jersey, shipped to St. Paul by rail and installed in the heart of downtown [60 years ago]. Despite the proliferation in recent years of fast-food chains and franchised restaurants, the diner remains a successful business, in part due to its unique atmosphere. Inspired by streamlined railroad dining cars, Mickey’s sports a symmetrical facade clad with yellow and red porcelain steel panels, a horizontal band of plate glass windows and a projecting neon sign with Art Deco lettering. The interior of the diner features stainless steel, mahogany and mirrored fixtures. A glass vestibule, added when the diner was installed, protects patrons from harsh Minnesota winters." (Mn. Historical Society) For more information, click here and enjoy the pictures, too! The diner was added to the National Register of Historial Places on February 24, 1983.

Wow, it arrived in 1937 according to the Road Food excerpt. That's impressive. I've loved visiting your area, but I've missed this gem.

  3. It's well deserved to be in the Historic Register. I've never eaten there, but will some day. It just wouldn't be St Paul with Mickeys Diner. Excellent photo.

  5. j'adore les Dinner, cela fait parti du folklore americain pour nous français. A New York, je ne manque jamais d'aller boire un verre (où manger) à l'empire diner, c'est mon prefere.

I adore Dinner, that made party of the American folklore for us French. In New York, I never fail to go to drink glass (where to eat) with the empire dinner, it is my prefers.

  6. My hubby and I took a riverboat cruise from St. Louis to St Paul and during our city tour we took a picture of this place. We used to be quite heavily into Disney and thought this was a cute addition to that hobby.
I couldn't do comments on Kuanyin"s blog either. It was there earlier this evening but now all the comment spots are gone. I hope she hasn't done something and its just a blogger issue for the day.
Thanks for your remarks on Fayes blog. Sometimes things sound differently when typed than they do in my head.

That is a nice-looking building. I am glad it is on the National Register too. I posted a picture of a building in our town on the same register.

I like your photograph of the building. Nice work.

I remember, as a boy, seeing similar buildings in all of the larger cities I got into. They are all gone now.

  9. Boy, that brings back so many memories...During school years, I worked at a diner on Long Island.
But I see the juke boxes here don't work anymore? Sorry, I would not be able to work at Mickeys ;-)

  21. Do you go to Mickey's sometimes? What do you order if you do?

I haven't eaten at a lot of authentic diners but have found the ambience interesting in the early hours of the morning! The most recent one I ate at was in Bethesda, Maryland. That one claims to date back to 1935.

Thanks for your visits to Villigen!
