Because of the small space in front of a local cafe where the sculpture stands, this magnificent wood carving is difficult to photograph. The light also interferes with a decent capture of the image. As seen from the street, it looks like an enormous eagle, spreading its wings. If seen on the reverse side, the wing shelters three carvings: an owl, bear, and a wolf. I hope to return again on a day where the light is different so I can take a photo that shows it in a more flattering way. Carving the stump of a felled tree is popular in St. Paul. During the state fair in August and September, wood carvers demonstrate how these artistic sculptures are formed. It's fascinating!

The wood carvers are incredibly talented Kate, looks like it was a sunny day. Here in Perth on a hot sunny day, especially around noon, it's almost impossible to take a good shot outdoors ☺
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating to watch the carvers work. It is a popular hobby here in Colorado too.
ReplyDeleteIt is marvelous, Kate!
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming these were done by chainsaw carvers, and I have no clue how they can do work like this with a chainsaw! Very beautiful and impressive.
ReplyDeleteI really like the 2nd pic with the bear peeking out, Kate!
ReplyDeleteI always admire the artists who can change a piece of wood into such beautiful birds.
ReplyDeleteThat does look like a very nice carving. Isn't it frustrating when it's so difficult to frame something that's so nice?
