Minnesota State Fish

The Ice Palace in downtown St. Paul, a central focus of Winter Carnival attractions, is a remarkable structure built with 4, 000 blocks of ice (see my header for a professional photo of the unveiling of the structure last week). After 3 visits during the construction and afterwards, I could not get a decent usable photo of the finished castle,  but I found one of the items that have been encased in the ice--a walleye. Not easy to find, either in the lakes' waters or encased in a block of ice. Ah, the intrepid explorer. . .moi! I added a few more photos showing a partial view of the finished castle, despite being annoyed at the presence of some of the corporate sponsors' names spoiling the facade.  Don't know about you, but that all-too-common practice of adding the names to stadiums, public works of art, and community projects, I find a bit frustrating. A simple plaque would do.  Despite that, the walleye is most appropriate for one of the "puzzle images."

  2. I feel the same way about corporate branding. Beautiful captures! A fish encased in the ice is a bit out there.

  3. The corporate naming drives me crazy especially when the same structure has had several different names. There is a theatre here that I have no idea what its present name is!

  4. This is so funny! I fished for walleyes on many Minnesota lakes. Great fun. And once again, we're in agreement. One definition of fascism is when the corporations rule. We're not so far away and we have a corporatist as prezident!

  5. That is pretty darn spectacular.

  6. I wonder how many Minnesotans are feeling like that poor fish around now. As cold as you may be I'm a bit envious of that clear, blue sky. We've been seeing all the great varieties of grey and wet skies that Mother Nature can offer.
