Paper Cut Outs (gouaches découpés)-Matisse

Towards the end of his life after being diagnosed with cancer and confined to a wheelchair, Matisse added another artistic genre to his wide-ranging talents. . . paper cut outs.  He called it "painting with scissors."  This one is part of the Matisse exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

According to my friend at The Hollywood Reporter, the film "Edward Scissorhands" was based loosely on his life. They were going to call it "Henri Ciseaux-mains", but it didn't have quite the same ring...

  15. This has me wondering how the cutouts were adhered...I assume they were? (Sorry, this is from an avid papercrafter.)
