Memories-ABC Wednesday "C"; Taphophile Tragics

Quiet Little Church
Picturesque Cemetery
Long lost relatives

This is the church and the cemetery where my parents and other members of my family are buried in Maplewood, Wisconsin.  It's a quiet little hamlet, reminiscent of small European towns.  Whenever we drive to Door County we make a stop here.  The graveyard is a perfect little place for a picnic, too.

The large tree is where we normally enjoy our meal among our long lost relatives, chief among whom are my parents, brother and his wife, and infant sister.

  1. belle architecture pour cette eglise, dans un style qui me fait penser aux eglises que l'on trouve dans le Brooklyn profond

  2. This brings back such nice memories, a little bittersweet, of visiting the cemetery in New Hampshire where my father's people are buried. When I remember being there, it is always a hot summer day and I can just feel the icy water from the hand pump that we draw up to water the flowers we plant. Then we let the cold water run over our sunburnt arms and faces.

    Thank you for this post.

  3. I suppose if the graveyard is attached to the church there is more incentive to keep the grounds neat and orderly. the cemeteries I have visited recently certainly aren't like this!

  10. Pretty spot. I remember when my parents bought their plots. Mother was so pleased that there was a tree nearby. When I visit her grave now I smile when I see that tree.

  13. It is a wonderful rural sight! There's just something peaceful and calm about such a place. The church reminds me of the Catholic church on I-94 between Woodbury and the St. Croix River.

  17. I often see people in cemeteries having picnics. Indeed, squatting on tombstones eating a sandwich! I think it shows acceptance of death and of loss, to have the courage to do this. To not be put off by societal pressures. Good for you.

Have you chosen your own resting place? It becomes difficult, when trying to keep partners together and families together. This is a very beautiful and kempt graveyard and church grounds. I do admire the steeple as well. Thank you for contributing to Taphophile Tragics. I do appreciate it.

  19. We recently buried my mother-in-law in a cemetery that was full of grave plaques that had bronze vases in them. And all of them had artificial flowers in them as you looked in all directions. It's in Arizona, in a place she chose, so I don't expect we will visit often. I do wish it were as beautiful and peaceful as "your" spot here. It's lovely.

  20. I love having a picnic with loved ones at the cemetary. As long as we the living share their memories and hold them in our hearts they are still alive and with us! Take the little ones to share in hearing the stories of the departed, for they will be responsible after we are gone!

  23. My parents and many relatives on my father's side are buried in a similarly peaceful, country setting. We never had a picnic there, but what a great idea! You may have started a new ritual :)
