Mississippi River Junk

This sculpture was made entirely from debris and junk that was taken from the Mississippi River by dedicated volunteers, trying to keep the river clean and navigable for those of us who believe that it's a national treasure. If you look closely, you can see a kite and fishing rods.  The lower portion contains rusted metal junk. It's a disturbing sight!

  1. i think it's remarkable art made from found materials. it marries so beautifully the place where the pieces were found with the theme of the "sculpture".

  4. From ugliness to art.

  5. I will never understand why people destroy the environment so casually, like the guy in the pickup recently who just tossed a cup into the street as he drove by.

But, this is a pertinent memorial to such impertinence and destructiveness. Good job to those involved. If it makes even one person take the "sanctity" of the environment more seriously it will be worth it.

  7. As a piece of art, I am fascinated. As a human being, I am disgusted. What a statement this piece makes...

  10. I never could understand why people throw junk into the rivers. Do they think that just because it sinks it is gone?
A big THANK YOU to those who clean up the other folks mess.

Sharon and I have been posting some pictures of the stretch of the Mississippi that we grew up on in our other blog.

  13. I'm not creative enough to imagine what they could make from the debris floating in Asian rivers... Disturbing, indeed. I wonder whether the "debris sculpture" does any good as an awareness-raising tactic?

  14. Absolutely amazing. Living in a rural area, we see so much trash dumped along our country roads by others - old toilets, ice chests, beer cans, even old clothes, you name it. Humans are such slobs!

  19. There is a lot to admire here. The art. The skill. The humor. The civic mindedness to clean the river.
